Shop Talk by Dave Carollo

Shop Talk - Dave Carollo, PGA Head Professional

It’s golf season at Hillcrest Country Club!!!  If you have been “south” for the winter, or out enjoying the snow at Bogus, Brundage or Sun Valley, welcome back!  The course is in terrific shape coming out of the winter months, and we look forward to an outstanding 2009 season.

Now that the calendar has turned to April 1st, I need to remind the membership of a few play guidelines that are back in effect.  First, groups of five players are not permitted from now until October.  Second, with play and course maintenance procedures increasing, our ability to start players on the back nine is limited.  The back nine starting procedure is outlined in the Golf Course Rules section of your member roster.  Third, guests are not permitted before 10:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays.  Finally, junior golfers under the age of 18 may not tee off on weekends until after 12:00 noon.  Thank you.

Please note the following tournaments for April:

Men’s Opening Day - Saturday, April 4 (10:00 shotgun start)
Ladies Opening Day - Thursday, April 9 (10:00 shotgun start)
Larry Malone Scholarship Pro-Am - Monday, April 13 (11:00 shotgun start)
Men's Association Spring Classic - April 25 & 26 (starting times from #1)
HLGA Eclectic - April 30 (9:00 shotgun start)

The Golf Shop is now fully staffed for the year, and I encourage you to welcome

our newest staff member, Nikki Olson.  Nikki is a BSU grad where she played on the varsity Women’s Golf Team, and has been around golf her entire life (Ron Rawls is Nikki’s stepfather).  She is very outgoing, and we look forward to having her here this season.

Congratulations to Brett Kleinkopf for passing his Level 1 of the PGA Professional Golf Management program.  Brett is now back to active status in the PGA, eligible to play in Pro-Am’s and on his way to becoming a Class A member of the association.

There are three Pro-Am’s in April, Blue Lakes, the Larry Malone (here) and Crane Creek.  Information on all Pro-Am’s is posted in the Locker Room, and if you are interested in playing in one or more of them, please let us know.

New merchandise is now arriving, and I encourage you to stop by and see what is new and exciting for Spring.  At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the new club fitting tools are outstanding, and I encourage you to take advantage of them!  Our first manufacturer’s demo day is Friday, April 17, when Taylor Made Golf will be here with their new product line.  As always, demo days are an excellent time to try out the new clubs, so please take advantage of them.  I feel so strongly about the importance of demo days that I am adding an incentive to get you out for them.  There will be a signup sheet at each demo day, and I will raffle off a free video golf lesson from all of the members who signed in and tried the new clubs.

The Golf Shop is now fully staffed for the year, and I encourage you to welcome our newest staffmember, Nikki Olson!

Thank you for taking the time to read this column, I really look forward to working for and with you this year.  Think sunshine, and think golf!
